چکیده

The investigation of microstructure is largely based on the knowledge of the transformation twins the are possible for a crystal undergoing a symmetry-breaking, di usionless phase transition. In order to have a complete description of this phenomenon, in this paper we review the subject of mechanical twinning from the point of view of nonlinear elasticity, and we examine the existence and genericity of all transformation twins, that is, all the rank-1 connections between the low-symmetry potential-wells occurring in a suitable neighborhood of the high-symmetry well for all the symmetry-breaking transitions that are possible in three-dimensional simple lattices. The analysis also shows that there are exceptions to the so-called \Mallard law", according to which the twins arise generically

Growth and form of gold nanorods prepared by seed-mediated, surfactant-directed synthesis

Gold nanorods were prepared via a seed-mediated sequential growth process involving the use of citratestabilised seed crystals and their subsequent growth in a series of reaction solutions containing [AuCl4] , ascorbic acid and the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonuim bromide (CTAB). Electron diffraction analysis and HRTEM images of mature nanorods showed superpositions of two specific pa...

A Computational Study to Find the Vibrational Modes Connected with Specific Molecular Structures of Calculated Compound

The purpose of this research is to provide a deeper understanding of the planar high- symmetry configuration instability. In the ideal case, the distortion corresponds to the movements of nuclei along normal modes that belong to non-totally symmetric irreps of the high symmertry (HS) point group of molecule. The analysis of the structural distortion from the HS nuclear arrangements of the JT ac...

Symmetry and reversibility of martensitic transformations

Martensitic transformations are diffusionless solid-to-solid phase transformations characterized by a rapid change of crystal structure, observed in metals, alloys, ceramics, and proteins. They come in two widely different classes. In steels, the transformation microstructure induced by quenching remains essentially unchanged upon subsequent loading or heating; the transformation is not reversi...

Micromechanical quantification of elastic, twinning, and slip strain partitioning exhibited by polycrystalline, monoclinic nickel–titanium during large uniaxial deformations measured via in-situ neutron diffraction

We draw upon existing knowledge of twinning and slip mechanics to develop a diffraction analysis model that allows for empirical quantification of individual deformation mechanisms to the macroscopic behaviors of low symmetry and phase transforming crystalline solids. These methods are applied in studying elasticity, accommodation twinning, deformation twinning, and slip through neutron diffrac...

Non-generic concentrations for shape-memory alloys; the case of CuZnAl

As is well known, the remarkable properties of many active crystalline materials, such as shape-memory alloys, originate from a symmetry-breaking martensitic phase transformation. A recent analysis (see [1]) has shown that if a special condition on the strain parameters is satisfied, the twinning ability of a crystal undergoing a cubic-to-monoclinic transformation is considerably increased. As ...
